Food Content Creators on a GLP-1

Food bloggers, restaurant reviewers, recipe developers, and people who film eating content all have a job built around appetite. A medication that reduces appetite and slows digestion changes that work in obvious ways.

People in food work do use these medications. The ones who manage it adjust how they taste rather than trying to eat the way they used to.

What changes

The most common side effects of these medications are gastrointestinal. A pharmacovigilance analysis of adverse event reports for semaglutide found gastrointestinal events to be the dominant category by a wide margin, and nausea is the most commonly reported effect in clinical trials.

For someone whose job is food, that shows up in several ways.

You feel full after a few bites. A tasting menu or a multi-dish review becomes physically difficult.

Rich food sits badly. Fried, creamy, and very fatty dishes are the most likely to trigger nausea on a slow stomach, and they are often the dishes people want reviewed.

Taste and enjoyment can shift. Some people find food less appealing, and a food eaten on a nauseated day can become unappealing for a long time afterward.

Your judgment may change. If you are not hungry, food can taste less exciting, which matters when your opinion is the product.

Taste, do not eat

The practical change most food professionals make is separating tasting from eating.

Take a bite or two of each dish, enough to judge it, and leave the rest.

Share plates with a companion or crew so nothing is wasted and nobody notices how much you ate.

Film first, taste second. The visual content does not require you to finish anything.

Start with the dishes that matter most, before you reach fullness.

Avoid eating everything at one sitting. Spread reviews or recipe testing across the day rather than one enormous session.

Protect your palate from aversions

A food eaten when you happen to be nauseated can become unpleasant for a long time afterward, even though the food was not the cause. For food professionals, this matters more than usual.

Do not taste signature or important dishes on your worst days, meaning the day or two after an injection or a dose increase.

If a food suddenly turns against you, leave it alone for a while rather than forcing it, then reintroduce it on a good day.

Time your injection around your content schedule

Side effects are usually worst in the day or two after an injection. If your restaurant visits, shoots, or recipe testing fall on predictable days, choose an injection day that keeps them clear.

Never step up the dose right before a big shoot, event, or review trip. Ask your provider to time increases for quieter periods. Our guides on dose escalation and the Ozempic starting dose cover how the progression and the early weeks usually go.

Consider this scenario: a food reviewer books a twelve-course tasting menu two days after a dose increase. By course four they are nauseated, by course seven they cannot face another plate, and their review reflects how they felt rather than the food. Booking the tasting a week later, on a settled dose, would have given them an accurate review and a good evening.

Make sure you are actually eating

The irony of food work on a GLP-1 is that you can spend all day around food and eat very little of it, much of it rich and not very nourishing.

Build real meals around your work: simple, protein-based food you tolerate, eaten on a schedule. Over weeks, look for a cluster: persistent fatigue, feeling cold when others are comfortable, hair shedding, dizziness on standing, or losing strength. Several together means you are not eating enough, whatever your job looks like.

Being open, or not

Some food creators share that they are on a GLP-1 and find their audience relates. Others keep it private. Both are legitimate. If you do share, it is reasonable to be clear that your experience is your own and that anyone considering treatment should talk to their own clinician.

Our guide on how tirzepatide and semaglutide side effects compare covers the differences between the two, which may matter if gastrointestinal effects are limiting your work.

Recipe development and testing

Recipe developers often test the same dish several times in a day. On these medications, that becomes difficult quickly.

Use tasting spoons rather than plating a portion.

Test in stages across the day instead of several full rounds back to back.

Have someone else eat the rest. Family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues can give useful feedback on finished dishes while you judge seasoning and texture from a small taste.

Write your notes immediately. When your appetite is low, your memory of how something tasted fades quickly, and a quick note while tasting is more reliable than a recollection later.

The short version

Separate tasting from eating: a bite or two of each dish, shared plates, and film before you taste. Keep important tastings and shoots away from your post-injection days and never step up the dose before a big event. Protect your palate by not tasting dishes you care about when nauseated. Make sure you eat real meals around your work. And share as much or as little about your treatment as you like.
