Turkey Trot on Zepbound: A Thanksgiving Morning 5K

For many families, Thanksgiving starts with a Turkey Trot: a 5K or 10K run or walk on Thanksgiving morning, often in costume, often in the cold, followed a few hours later by the biggest meal of the year. For people who have lost weight on Zepbound or compounded tirzepatide, it is often their first race, and a proud moment.

This guide covers how to fuel for the race, how to time your injection, and how to handle Thanksgiving dinner afterward.

Time your injection around Thanksgiving week

The Zepbound prescribing information gives the median time to maximum concentration as 24 hours after a dose, with a range of 8 to 72 hours, and an elimination half-life of about five to six days in people with overweight or obesity.

In practice, many people notice side effects most in the first day or two after their injection. If you inject on a Tuesday or Wednesday, Thanksgiving morning, the race, and dinner may all fall in that window.

Look at your injection day now. If it lands just before Thanksgiving, ask your provider whether to adjust it in the weeks before. The Zepbound label allows the day to be changed as long as there are at least three days between doses.

Do not step up your dose the week before Thanksgiving. Ask your provider to hold any increase until the following week.

If you are new to Zepbound, the early weeks tend to bring the strongest side effects. Our guide on the starting dose of tirzepatide covers what to expect.

Race morning: eat something

On an appetite-suppressing medication, and with a big dinner coming, many people head to a Turkey Trot on an empty stomach. For a 5K, that often means feeling flat, shaky, or lightheaded halfway round, especially in the cold.

Eat a light breakfast one to two hours before the start: toast with peanut butter, a banana, oatmeal, or yogurt. Something simple and familiar.

Avoid a heavy or greasy breakfast right before running.

Drink water in the morning, without overloading your stomach.

Go easy on coffee on an empty stomach.

During the race

Start slowly. Race-day excitement makes everyone go out too fast.

Walking is fine. Many Turkey Trot participants walk the whole way, and walk breaks are common for runners.

Use the water stations if there are any.

Stop and walk if you feel dizzy or lightheaded. Dizziness is among the reported side effects of tirzepatide, and it is more likely if you have eaten little. If it does not pass, step off the course and get help.

Dress for the weather

Turkey Trots are often cold. Many people feel colder after losing weight or when eating less. Wear layers you can shed, gloves, and a hat, and bring something warm for after the finish.

After the race

Eat something with protein within an hour or two, even a small snack, rather than saving everything for dinner. Yogurt, eggs, a protein shake, or some turkey from the kitchen all work.

Keep drinking water.

Do not try to “earn” dinner by eating nothing all day. On these medications, saving room does not create room, and arriving at dinner very hungry often means eating too fast.

Thanksgiving dinner

These medications slow how quickly the stomach empties, so a large, rich meal can sit heavily.

Start with turkey or other protein.

Take a small spoonful of each side rather than full servings.

Eat slowly and pause before seconds.

Choose one dessert, or share.

Go easy on alcohol. Your old tolerance is not a reliable guide on these medications, especially after a morning of exercise.

Take a walk after dinner. It helps digestion and is a nice way to finish the day.

Building on the race

A Turkey Trot can be the start of something. Many people find that training for a 5K gives them structure through the winter. Pair it with strength training and enough protein to protect muscle as you lose weight. Our guide on getting the most out of your GLP-1 treatment covers why protein and resistance exercise matter so much.

Consider this scenario: someone on Zepbound steps up their dose on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, then runs a Turkey Trot on Thursday morning on just a coffee. At the 2-mile mark they feel lightheaded and have to walk. Saving room, they eat nothing more until a 3 p.m. dinner, then eat quickly and fill their plate twice. By evening they are nauseated and uncomfortable. Holding the dose increase, a light breakfast, a protein snack after the race, and a slower, smaller dinner would very likely have given them a great day.

Walking it with family

Many people walk their Turkey Trot with children, parents, or a dog, and that is a great way to start the day. The same basics apply: eat something first, bring water, and dress warmly. If you are pushing a stroller or walking with older relatives, set an easy pace and enjoy the atmosphere. There is no finish time that matters on Thanksgiving morning.

The short version

Check where your injection day falls and ask your provider about adjusting it so Thanksgiving is not in the first day or two after a dose. Hold any dose increase. Eat a light breakfast before the race, start slowly, walk when you need to, and stop if you feel dizzy. Dress for the cold. Eat a protein snack after the race rather than saving room. At dinner, start with protein, take small portions, eat slowly, and walk afterward.
