In most cases, a semaglutide pen that will not dial further is telling you it does not have enough medication left for the dose you are asking for. The dial stops at the amount remaining, which is a safety feature rather than a malfunction. The second most common cause is trying to dial past the pen’s maximum setting. Actual mechanical failure is a distant third, and forcing the dial is the one response that can turn a working pen into a broken one.<\/p>\n

Before anything else: do not force it. If the dial will not move with light, steady pressure, stop and work through the causes below.<\/p>\n

Cause 1: The pen is nearly empty<\/h2>\n

Multi-dose semaglutide pens hold a fixed volume. As you use them, the amount available for the next dose shrinks. When less remains than the dose you are dialing, the counter simply stops at whatever is left, and further turning does nothing.<\/p>\n

This is easy to confirm. Look at the number the counter stopped at and compare it with your prescribed dose. If it stopped short, the pen is low rather than jammed.<\/p>\n

What to do next depends on your instructions for use and your provider’s guidance. Some pen instructions describe an option for completing a dose from a second pen. That is not a decision to improvise. Call your pharmacy or provider, tell them the number the counter stopped at, and follow what they tell you. Cause 2: You are asking for more than the pen offers<\/h2>\n

Each pen strength has a maximum. A pen configured for lower doses will not dial to a higher one no matter how hard you turn, because the mechanism physically stops there.<\/p>\n

Consider this scenario: a patient is told at a check-in to move from 0.5 mg to 1 mg, has two pens in the fridge from a previous fill, grabs the older one out of habit, and finds the dial refuses to go past 0.5. Cause 3: The pen is cold<\/h2>\n

Straight from the refrigerator, the internal lubrication is thicker and the whole mechanism feels stiffer. This does not usually stop the dial outright, but it can make it feel notably harder to turn, which people interpret as sticking.<\/p>\n

The fix is patience. Let the pen sit at room temperature for fifteen to thirty minutes before you handle it. This also makes the injection itself more comfortable, since room-temperature medication stings less going in.<\/p>\n

Cause 4: You are trying to dial backwards past zero<\/h2>\n
