How to Handle a Business Dinner When the Client Orders for the Table

This is the one dining situation where your usual tools do not work. You cannot order a starter as your main, cannot ask for a half portion, cannot split a dish, and cannot easily take leftovers home. Someone else has chosen, the food arrives, and you are being watched by people whose opinion of you matters professionally.

Two things make it manageable, and both happen before the food arrives.

Eat beforehand. A small protein-containing meal an hour or two ahead means you are not arriving empty into a situation you do not control. This is the single most useful thing you can do and almost nobody does it.

Have one line ready. So you are not composing under pressure at a table of colleagues and clients.

Eating properly beforehand is counterintuitive and correct

The instinct is to arrive hungry so you can eat what is served. That does not work on this medication, because your limit is how quickly your stomach empties rather than how much space you started with.

What arriving empty actually produces is worse judgment, a higher chance of eating past comfort to be polite, and more effect from alcohol on the drinks that usually come first.

Eat something with protein an hour or two before. You will manage the meal better, not worse.

Consider this scenario: a patient skips lunch before a client dinner, has two drinks during a long pre-dinner conversation, and by the time the shared plates arrive feels queasy and can barely eat. She spends the evening pushing food around, which is exactly the outcome she was trying to avoid, and the client notices. Eating at four o’clock would have changed the evening entirely.

At the table

Take small amounts of everything that arrives. With shared plates this is straightforward. With a set menu, eating some of each course is far less noticeable than finishing two courses and abandoning the rest.

Protein first. Whatever you can manage should be the part that counts. Our guide on how much protein you need on Ozempic or semaglutide covers what to aim for.

Eat slowly so you are still eating when others are.

Keep your cutlery moving. Being visibly engaged with the food matters more than the quantity.

Talk more. Conversation is the job at a business dinner anyway, and someone talking is not someone being watched for what they eat.

Go easy on the richest dishes, which empty slowest and are what make the second half of a long evening uncomfortable.

If you can influence the order

Sometimes you can, and it is worth trying without making it a discussion.

“Shall we get a few things to share?” Shared plates give you portion control that a set menu does not.

Order early if the table is choosing individually, before a pattern of large mains is set.

If asked what you want, name something lighter. Nobody scrutinizes an individual choice.

If the client has already ordered for everyone, that ship has sailed and the rest of this article applies.

The drinks are the harder part

Business dinners frequently involve a long drinks period and wine with the meal, and alcohol affects you more than it used to because there is less food in your stomach and you may weigh less.

Being noticeably affected at a client dinner is a professional problem rather than just a personal one.

Eat before, as above.

Nurse the first drink. Nobody tracks the level in your glass.

Alternate with water and keep a glass visible.

Accept a glass and leave it if declining feels awkward. Holding a drink you barely touch is unremarkable.

Our guide on Ozempic and alcohol in social settings covers the social side.

What to say

Keep it brief, professional, and unrelated to health:

“I had a late lunch.”

“I’m pacing myself, we’ve got an early start.”

“It’s excellent, I’m just a slow eater.”

“I’m good, thanks.”

You are under no obligation to disclose a medical treatment to a client or a colleague, and workplace disclosure travels further than people expect. Our guide on how to talk to friends and family about taking Ozempic covers deciding who to tell and how, which applies equally to professional settings.

If a host presses because they chose the restaurant and want you to enjoy it, praising something specific answers their actual concern. “This is the best thing I’ve eaten this month” does more than an empty plate.

Do not eat past comfort to be polite

The point worth being firm about.

Eating well past fullness on this medication produces nausea, reflux, and sometimes hours of feeling unwell. Being visibly unwell at a client dinner, or having to leave the table, is a considerably worse professional outcome than leaving food on a plate that nobody was studying.

Nobody remembers what you ate. They remember whether you were good company.

If your injection day falls near it

If the day or two after your injection is when side effects are most noticeable, that is worth not scheduling a client dinner into where you have the choice.

Moving your injection day later stretches an interval, which is the forgiving direction, and every product specifies a minimum interval in its instructions for use. Discuss any change with your provider rather than skipping a dose.

Our guide on Ozempic for busy professionals covers fitting treatment around a demanding schedule.

When to call your provider

Contact your provider if work dinners reliably leave you unwell, if you are unable to eat adequately during periods of client entertaining, if alcohol is causing problems, or if you want to move your injection day around a recurring commitment.

The short version

Eat something with protein an hour or two before, because you have less control at this dinner than at any other and arriving empty makes it worse. Take small amounts of everything, protein first, eat slowly, and talk. Nurse the drinks. Have one short professional line ready. And do not eat past comfort to be polite, because being unwell at the table is the worse outcome by far.
