Kitchen Remodel on Wegovy: Eating and Storing Medication Without a Kitchen
A kitchen remodel sounds like a home project until you are living through it. The fridge ends up in the garage or the dining room, the sink is gone, the power goes off without warning, and dinner becomes takeout or whatever fits in a microwave. On Wegovy or compounded semaglutide, two things need a plan: where your medication lives, and how you keep eating enough when cooking is suddenly hard.
Where your medication should live
Your medication needs to stay within the range in the storage instructions that came with it. For compounded semaglutide, follow the instructions from the pharmacy that prepared it. A fridge that has been moved, unplugged, and plugged back in, or one sitting in a hot or cold garage, may not hold that range reliably.
This is not a theoretical worry. A study that tracked insulin, another temperature-sensitive injectable, found it was often kept outside the recommended temperature range, both in home refrigerators and when carried by patients.
Pick the most stable fridge you have. That may be a small fridge inside the house rather than the main fridge in the garage.
Use a fridge thermometer and check it against the range in your instructions, especially in the first days after the fridge moves.
Keep the medication away from the freezer compartment and the back wall, where items can freeze.
Ask your contractor when the power will be off, and plan around it.
Never use medication that may have frozen or overheated. If you are not sure, call your pharmacy. Our guide on storing compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at home covers the basics.
Keep it away from the work
Construction means dust, open doors, and people coming and going. Keep your medication and sharps container in a room the crew does not use, out of reach of children and pets, and away from heat sources such as work lights.
Set up a temporary food station
Pick a corner of another room and gather what you need: a microwave, a kettle, a small fridge if you have one, a cutting board, paper plates, and a dish tub you can carry to a bathroom or laundry sink. A small air fryer or electric skillet extends what you can make.
A workable station makes it much more likely that you eat something at home instead of skipping meals until the evening takeout.
Foods that need little or no cooking
With a smaller appetite, you need food that is easy to reach for and gives you some protein each time:
- Yogurt, cottage cheese, and string cheese
- Eggs scrambled in the microwave
- Rotisserie chicken, deli turkey, or canned tuna or salmon
- Hummus with crackers or vegetables
- Microwave rice or quinoa pouches with beans
- Instant oatmeal made with milk
- Soup heated in a mug
- Fruit you can eat without a knife
Keep breakfast simple and fixed, since that is the meal most likely to disappear when the kitchen is a construction site.
Takeout without the after-effects
Restaurant portions are large, and many takeout favorites are rich, fried, or greasy, which are the foods many people on these medications find hardest to tolerate. Order smaller items, share dishes, choose grilled or broth-based options when you can, and box half for the next day.
Our guide on what to eat after an injection has ideas for foods that tend to sit well.
Do not let meals slide
When cooking is hard and appetite is low, it is easy to drift into one meal a day. Watch for the signs of under-eating: persistent fatigue, feeling cold, hair shedding, dizziness when you stand, losing strength, or losing weight faster than you and your provider intended. If you notice them, tell your provider.
Time your doses around the worst weeks
Demolition and the first weeks of a remodel are often the most disruptive. If a dose increase is due then, ask your provider whether to hold it. If you have only just started Wegovy, our guide on the semaglutide starting dose covers what the early weeks usually feel like.
If you move out during the work
Some people stay with family or in a short-term rental for part of a remodel. Pack your medication in its packaging and an insulated bag, follow the storage instructions, and never leave it in a car. For stays of a week or less, injecting before you leave can mean carrying nothing at all.
Clean-up and hydration
Dust and long days of decisions make it easy to forget water. Keep a refillable bottle in your temporary station and drink through the day, especially if you are helping with the work yourself.
Consider this scenario: during a summer remodel, someone moves the fridge to the garage and keeps their Wegovy pens in the door. The garage gets hot in the afternoon and the fridge struggles. They also skip breakfast for weeks because the kitchen is gone, then eat a large greasy takeout dinner on their injection day. They feel sick for two days and later wonder whether the pens were affected. Keeping the medication in a small fridge inside, checking a thermometer, calling the pharmacy about the pens, stocking a simple breakfast, and choosing a lighter dinner would very likely have avoided both problems.
The short version
Keep your medication in the most stable fridge you have, check it with a thermometer, and never use medication that may have frozen or overheated. Set up a temporary food station, stock easy protein foods, keep breakfast simple, and choose lighter takeout in smaller portions. Watch for signs of under-eating, ask about holding dose increases during demolition, and drink water through the day.
If you want a provider who will help you keep treatment steady through a disruptive few weeks, TrimRx pairs semaglutide treatment with ongoing provider access.
