Can You Eat Tacos on Ozempic?

Taco night is a weekly ritual in plenty of homes, and tacos are one of the most popular restaurant and takeout orders around. If you have started Ozempic or another GLP-1, you may wonder whether they still have a place on your plate. The good news is that tacos can be one of the easier meals to fit into treatment, because they come in small, separate portions and are easy to load with protein.

Here is how to enjoy tacos in a way that sits well.

The short answer

Yes, most people can eat tacos on Ozempic. The things that tend to cause trouble are not the tacos themselves, but large portions, heavy toppings, fried shells, and lots of cheese and sour cream. A couple of well-built tacos with lean protein are often very comfortable.

Why portion matters more now

A study of semaglutide 2.4 mg, the dose in Wegovy and higher than Ozempic doses, found it reduced how much people ate at a meal, changed their hunger and fullness ratings, and slowed how quickly the stomach emptied. Where you might once have eaten four or five tacos, one or two may now be plenty. The nice thing about tacos is that you can stop after one, wrap up the rest, and nothing is wasted.

Build a taco that sits well

  • Start with protein. Grilled chicken, fish, shrimp, lean ground beef or turkey, or beans.
  • Choose soft shells over fried hard shells if greasy food bothers you. Corn tortillas are small and light.
  • Go easy on heavy toppings. A little cheese and sour cream go a long way.
  • Add fresh toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, and lime.
  • Use salsa for flavor, milder if spice bothers your stomach.

Make the protein count

Tacos can be a great protein meal, but only if the filling is generous compared with the toppings. Eat the filling first if you fill up quickly. Our guide on tracking your progress covers simple ways to notice whether your meals are giving you enough protein over a week.

Taco bowls are an easy option

If even a tortilla feels like too much, try a taco bowl: protein, a spoonful of beans, a little rice, and fresh toppings. You can eat the protein first and leave the rest.

Watch the sides

Chips, refried beans with lard, cheesy queso, and large servings of rice can fill you up fast and sit heavily. Choose one small side, or skip them.

Spice and your stomach

Hot salsas and spicy meats can add to heartburn or nausea for some people on these medications. Choose milder options, especially in the days after a dose increase, and add heat at the table so you can control it. Our guide on what to eat to minimize nausea has gentle food ideas.

Taco night with the family

Set out fillings and toppings buffet-style so everyone builds their own. That way you can make one or two tacos that suit you without anyone noticing. You do not owe anyone an explanation for eating less. Leftover fillings keep well, but keep them from crowding your medication in the fridge. Store your medication in its own labeled box on a middle shelf. Our guide on storing compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at home covers the basics.

After a dose increase

Side effects tend to be strongest early and after each dose increase. On those days, a single soft taco with grilled chicken and mild salsa may be easier than a full plate. Our guide on the Ozempic starting dose covers what the first weeks usually look like. Never skip a dose so you can eat more at taco night. Our guide on taking a break and restarting covers why stopping and restarting is more involved than it sounds.

If you have diabetes

The prescribing information for Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, at a higher dose, notes that patients with diabetes mellitus taking it in combination with insulin or an insulin secretagogue, such as a sulfonylurea, may have an increased risk of hypoglycemia, including severe hypoglycemia. Tortillas, rice, and chips all affect blood sugar, so pair them with protein, check your blood sugar as directed, and never change those medicines on your own.

Watch for the signs of under-eating too: persistent fatigue, feeling cold, hair shedding, dizziness when you stand, losing strength, and losing weight faster than you and your provider intended.

Consider this scenario: a man on Ozempic keeps his family’s Tuesday taco night going, piling three fried hard shells with beef, queso, and sour cream, and eating chips while he waits. Halfway through the second taco he feels uncomfortably full, and he spends the evening with heartburn. Starting with one soft corn taco of grilled chicken and fresh salsa, skipping the chips, and saving extra filling for lunch the next day would very likely have let him enjoy the tradition without the discomfort.

The short version

You can eat tacos on Ozempic. Build them around lean protein, choose soft shells if greasy food bothers you, keep cheese, sour cream, and fried sides small, and add fresh toppings. One or two tacos may now be plenty, and taco bowls are an easy alternative. Go milder on spice after dose increases, and pair tortillas and rice with protein if you have diabetes.
