Can You Eat Chicken Noodle Soup on Ozempic?

Chicken noodle soup is a classic food for feeling under the weather, and it can be just as useful during GLP-1 treatment. Warm broth, soft noodles, and tender chicken are easy to eat in small amounts, and they can feel soothing on days when your stomach is unsettled on Ozempic or another GLP-1.

Here is how to get the most from it.

The short answer

Yes, you can eat chicken noodle soup on Ozempic, and for many people it is one of the easiest foods on hard days. The main things to think about are protein, salt, and portion size.

Why soup can feel good

Warm, liquid meals often sit more gently than heavy, dry foods when your stomach empties more slowly. Sipping broth also adds fluid, which matters on days with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Our guide on what to eat to minimize nausea has more gentle food ideas.

Fluids when you are unwell

The prescribing information for Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, at a higher dose, warns about acute kidney injury due to dehydration, and notes that the majority of reported events occurred in people who had gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Broth can help with fluids on those days, but it is not a replacement for water. Seek care if you cannot keep fluids down, feel very dizzy, or have severe stomach pain that does not go away.

Boost the protein

Many canned soups have only a little chicken. To get more protein:

  • Add extra shredded chicken.
  • Stir in an egg as the soup simmers, like egg drop soup.
  • Add a spoonful of white beans.
  • Have a cheese stick or Greek yogurt on the side.

Eat the chicken first if you fill up quickly. Our guide on getting the most out of your GLP-1 treatment covers why protein matters.

Watch the salt

Canned soups and bouillon are often high in sodium. If you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, or your provider has asked you to limit salt, choose low-sodium versions or make your own.

Homemade soup

Homemade soup lets you add more chicken and vegetables and control the salt. Simmer chicken, carrots, celery, and onion in low-sodium broth, add a small handful of noodles, and freeze extra portions for hard days. Keep soup containers from crowding your medication in the fridge. Our guide on storing compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at home covers the basics.

Portion and pace

A cup or small bowl is often enough. Sip slowly, and stop when you are comfortable.

After a dose increase

Side effects tend to be strongest early and after each dose increase. A cup of chicken soup can be one of the easiest meals on those days. Our guide on semaglutide dose escalation covers how dose steps usually work, and our guide on the Ozempic starting dose covers what the first weeks usually look like. If you are comparing medications, our guide on tirzepatide and semaglutide side effects covers how they differ. If you can only manage soup for several days, talk to your provider before stopping. Our guide on taking a break and restarting covers why stopping and restarting is more involved than it sounds.

If you have diabetes

The prescribing information for Wegovy notes that patients with diabetes mellitus taking it in combination with insulin or an insulin secretagogue, such as a sulfonylurea, may have an increased risk of hypoglycemia, including severe hypoglycemia. On days when you can only manage soup, you may be eating much less than usual. Check your blood sugar as directed, and never change those medicines on your own.

Other soups that work

If you get tired of chicken noodle, other broth-based soups can do the same job: egg drop soup, miso soup with tofu, turkey and vegetable soup, lentil soup, or a simple bone broth with shredded chicken. Creamy soups made with lots of cream or cheese tend to sit more heavily, so save them for days when your stomach feels settled.

Watch for the signs of under-eating too: persistent fatigue, feeling cold, hair shedding, dizziness when you stand, losing strength, and losing weight faster than you and your provider intended.

Consider this scenario: a woman on Ozempic has two days of nausea after a dose increase and lives on cans of chicken noodle soup with very little chicken in them, plus crackers. By day three she is tired and lightheaded. Adding extra shredded chicken and an egg to the soup, sipping water between bowls, having a Greek yogurt when she felt able, and calling her provider about the nausea would very likely have helped her recover more quickly.

The short version

You can eat chicken noodle soup on Ozempic, and it is one of the easiest foods on nausea days. Boost the protein with extra chicken, an egg, or beans, choose low-sodium versions if you need to limit salt, and sip slowly from a small bowl. Make and freeze homemade soup for hard days, keep drinking water too, and talk to your provider if soup is all you can manage for more than a few days.
