Do Skin Tags Go Away With GLP-1 Weight Loss?

Existing skin tags generally do not disappear on their own. What may change is how many new ones form, because skin tags are associated with insulin resistance and with friction, and weight loss tends to improve both.

So the realistic expectation is fewer new ones rather than the old ones falling off. Removing existing tags is a separate matter and one for a clinician rather than a home remedy.

Why skin tags form

Two contributors, and both are relevant here.

Friction. Skin tags cluster where skin rubs against skin or clothing: neck, armpits, under the breasts, groin, and eyelids. Carrying more weight means more skin-on-skin contact in those areas.

Insulin resistance. Skin tags are recognized as being associated with insulin resistance and with metabolic conditions. They frequently appear alongside acanthosis nigricans, the darkened velvety skin sometimes seen at the neck and armpits, which has the same association.

That second point is the interesting one, because it makes skin tags a visible marker of something happening metabolically rather than purely a cosmetic feature.

What weight loss changes

Less friction, as skin folds reduce.

Improved insulin sensitivity. This is one of the well-documented effects of this treatment class, and it is plausible that a reduction in new tag formation follows, though the direct evidence on skin tags specifically is limited.

No effect on existing tags. They do not have a blood supply that recedes with fat loss. They are small skin growths, and they stay unless removed.

Consider this scenario: a patient a year into treatment notices they have not developed any new tags in months, but the ones on their neck are unchanged. That is the expected pattern, and it is worth knowing in advance so the persistence of existing tags does not read as treatment failure.

Do not remove them yourself

This deserves a clear statement, because home removal is widely marketed and genuinely inadvisable.

Do not tie them off with thread or dental floss. This causes infection and scarring, and it is a common source of avoidable problems.

Do not cut them off. Bleeding, infection, and scarring.

Do not use over-the-counter freezing kits or acid preparations on the face, neck, or near the eyes without advice. These are not precision instruments.

Do not remove anything you have not had looked at. This is the important one, covered below.

Clinical removal is straightforward, quick, and done under sterile conditions, with several methods available depending on size and location. Ask your provider or a dermatologist.

Get it looked at before assuming it is a skin tag

Not everything that looks like a skin tag is one. Worth having a clinician assess anything that:

  • Has changed in size, shape, or colour
  • Is dark, or has more than one colour
  • Bleeds without being knocked
  • Is painful or itchy
  • Has irregular borders
  • Appeared recently and is growing
  • Looks different from your other tags

Skin lesions need identifying before they are removed, and self-diagnosis from photographs is not reliable. This is the single most useful sentence in this article.

Other skin changes during treatment

Skin tags are one of several things people notice. Others include changes in texture, elasticity, and how skin sits after substantial loss.

Our guides on how GLP-1 medications affect your skin and loose skin after GLP-1 weight loss cover the broader picture.

If you have an existing skin condition, weight loss often affects it. Our guides on Ozempic and psoriasis and GLP-1 medications and eczema cover what tends to happen.

Acanthosis nigricans

Worth mentioning separately because it travels with skin tags and people often do not know it has a name.

The darkened, thickened, velvety patches sometimes seen at the neck, armpits, or groin are associated with insulin resistance. Unlike skin tags, this can improve with improving metabolic health, though it tends to be gradual and does not always fully resolve.

If you have it, mention it to your provider, since it is relevant metabolic information rather than purely cosmetic.

Practical management in the meantime

Reduce friction where you can, with looser clothing in affected areas and moisture-wicking fabrics.

Keep skin folds dry, since moisture plus friction is worse than either.

Do not pick at them. Irritated tags become inflamed and can bleed.

Protect them from clothing and jewellery that catches, which is the main cause of tags becoming painful.

When to see a provider

Book an appointment if you want existing tags removed, if any lesion has changed or looks different from the others, if a tag is painful, bleeding, or repeatedly irritated, if you have darkened skin patches you have not had assessed, or if you have a large number appearing rapidly.

That last point is worth flagging, since a sudden crop of new tags is sometimes a prompt to check metabolic markers. Our guide on what lab tests to expect while on GLP-1 medications covers what is typically monitored.

The short version

Existing tags stay, new ones may form less often as insulin sensitivity and friction both improve. Do not tie them off or cut them, because that causes infection and scarring for no good reason. Get anything that has changed, darkened, or bled assessed before removal, and have removal done clinically rather than at home.
