Going Through a Divorce on Wegovy
A divorce or separation can upend everything at once: where you live, your money, your time with your children, your sleep, and your sense of who you are. Many people find they stop eating properly during the worst of it. If you are also taking Wegovy or compounded semaglutide, both of which reduce appetite, those two pressures stack.
This is not a reason to panic, and it is not a reason to stop treatment on your own. It is a reason to be deliberate about food, sleep, and your injection schedule for a while.
Two things pushing your appetite down
Research on semaglutide 2.4 mg, the same dose as Wegovy, found that it reduced how much people ate at a meal, changed their hunger and fullness ratings, and slowed how quickly the stomach emptied. That is how the medication works.
Acute stress often does something similar. Many people describe a knot in the stomach, no interest in food, and forgetting to eat altogether. Put the two together and it is easy to go a whole day on coffee.
The risk is under-eating. Watch for persistent fatigue, feeling cold, hair shedding, dizziness when you stand, losing strength, and losing weight faster than you and your provider intended. If you notice them, tell your provider.
Eat something small and often
You do not need big meals right now. You need something regularly. Set reminders on your phone if you have to, and keep food within reach that needs no effort:
- Yogurt, cottage cheese, or a protein drink
- Cheese and crackers
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Peanut butter on toast
- Soup you can heat in a mug
- Fruit and a handful of nuts
Aim for some protein each time you eat. Our guide on what to eat after an injection has more ideas for foods that tend to sit well.
Keep your injection day steady
Chaos makes it easy to miss a dose. Set a recurring reminder and keep your medication somewhere you will see it, whether that is at home, at a friend’s place, or in a new apartment. Follow the storage instructions that came with it when you move it.
If you do miss a dose, follow the label rule for Wegovy. If your next dose is more than 2 days away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is less than 2 days away, skip it and take the next one on schedule. If you miss two or more doses in a row, ask your prescriber whether to resume as scheduled or start the dose escalation again.
Hold dose increases during the worst weeks
If a dose increase is coming up during a court date, a move, or the week the papers are signed, ask your provider whether it makes sense to hold it. Side effects tend to be strongest after each increase, and you do not need extra nausea on top of everything else. Our guide on semaglutide dose escalation covers how the steps usually work.
If you are thinking about stopping
Money, time, and energy may all feel stretched, and stopping treatment can seem like one less thing to manage. Make that decision with your provider rather than on your own. If your coverage currently runs through your spouse’s plan, raise it with your provider early so a change does not leave you with a sudden gap.
Our guide on taking a break and restarting covers what stopping and restarting involve.
Sleep and evenings
Nights are often the hardest part. Eat something before bed if you have barely eaten all day, since going to bed hungry makes sleep harder for some people. Keep a regular wake-up time even when sleep is broken.
Be careful with alcohol, especially on little food. If drinking is becoming the way you get through the evenings, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free and confidential at 1-800-662-4357.
Weeks with the kids and weeks without
If you share custody, your eating may swing between two patterns. On weeks with your children, you cook family meals and eat with them. On weeks alone, the kitchen goes quiet and it is easy to skip dinner entirely.
Plan for the quiet weeks. Keep a few easy meals in the freezer, and treat dinner as a fixed part of the evening even when no one else is there.
When people comment on your weight
Weight loss during a divorce attracts comments, from “you look amazing” to “are you okay?” You do not owe anyone an explanation. “I’m taking care of myself” is enough. If you want to say more, “My doctor and I are working on my health” is a short, factual line.
If a relative or friend keeps pushing, it is reasonable to ask them privately to stop.
Get support
A therapist, a divorce support group, or a few friends you can call at any hour will help more than anything in this article. Keep your regular check-ins with your provider, too. Our guide on getting the most out of your GLP-1 treatment covers the basics that keep treatment on track when life is hard.

Consider this scenario: someone takes their Wegovy on Sundays. In the week they move out, they forget it entirely and remember on Friday evening. They take it then, and take their next dose on Sunday as usual, two doses less than two days apart. That week they live on coffee and a few crackers. By Monday they are vomiting and too dizzy to drive. A phone reminder, following the label rule to skip the dose because the next one was less than 2 days away, small snacks every few hours, and a call to their provider would very likely have prevented it.
The short version
Stress and Wegovy both lower appetite, so eat something small and often, with some protein, even when you do not feel like it. Keep your injection day steady, follow the missed-dose rule, and ask about holding increases during the hardest weeks. Do not stop treatment on your own, watch your drinking, plan for quiet weeks, and lean on real support.
