State Fair on Ozempic: Fair Food, Heat and Rides

The state fair, or the county fair, is a celebration of food that exists nowhere else: deep-fried butter, funnel cakes, corn dogs, turkey legs, cheese curds, and whatever new fried creation is this year’s headline. Add a day of walking in the sun, livestock barns, and carnival rides that spin you upside down, and it is a lot for any stomach.

On Ozempic or another GLP-1, the fair is still fun. It just needs a bit of strategy, especially around fried food and rides.

Why fair food and rides are a tough combination

Gastrointestinal side effects are the most common with these medications. In the trials for Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, at a higher dose, nausea was reported by 44% of people on the medication against 16% on placebo, and vomiting by 24% against 6%.

Fair food is almost entirely fried, rich, or sweet, which is exactly what tends to sit heavily on a slowed stomach. Then there are the rides. Spinning, dropping, and swinging can make anyone queasy, and doing it with a stomach full of fried food on a medication that already causes nausea is asking for trouble.

The fair food strategy

Eat a proper breakfast with protein before you go. Arriving hungry means the first fried thing you see becomes lunch.

Pick your must-haves in advance. Most people have two or three fair foods they really want. Choose them, and skip the rest.

Share everything. A funnel cake, a turkey leg, or a bucket of fries for the group lets everyone taste without anyone eating a whole one.

Look for protein. Grilled corn, roasted chicken, a turkey leg, or a pulled pork sandwich are often easier than deep-fried items.

Space out your treats through the day instead of eating them back to back.

Be wary of giant drinks. Huge lemonades and sodas are a lot of sugar and liquid on a slow stomach.

Rides

Do the rides before you eat, or wait a good while after a meal.

Skip the most intense spinning rides if you are prone to nausea, especially early in treatment or after a dose increase.

Start with gentler rides and see how you feel.

Sit down and sip water if you feel queasy after a ride. Do not go straight to the next one.

Heat and walking

Fairs often happen in late summer, with hours in the sun and miles of walking.

Carry a water bottle and refill it often.

Use shade and the air-conditioned exhibit halls to cool down.

Watch for signs of dehydration: dizziness, headache, dark urine, cramps, or feeling unusually drained.

Wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.

Dizziness is among the reported side effects of these medications, and heat, walking, and little water make it more likely. If you feel lightheaded, sit down, drink water, and eat something simple.

Livestock barns and strong smells

Some people on these medications find strong smells harder to tolerate, especially when nauseated. If the animal barns or the fryer smoke bother you, step outside into fresh air.

Plan your dose around the fair

Side effects are usually worst in the day or two after an injection and after a dose increase.

Time your injection so fair day is not in the hardest window. Ask your provider before changing your usual day.

Do not step up your dose right before a fair day. Our guide on the Ozempic starting dose covers why each new step tends to bring stronger side effects.

If you are camping or staying overnight at a multi-day fair, plan medication storage. Our guide on storing compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at home covers the requirements, and for a short trip, injecting before you leave can mean carrying nothing.

Consider this scenario: someone on Ozempic arrives at the state fair at noon having skipped breakfast. They eat a corn dog, cheese curds, and a funnel cake in the first hour, drink a giant lemonade, and then ride the spinning swings and a drop tower. Within minutes they are nauseated and spend an hour sitting on a bench in the heat. A proper breakfast, choosing two must-haves, sharing them, doing rides before eating, and drinking water would very likely have given them the whole day.

If you feel unwell

Find shade, sit down, sip water, and eat something plain. Most fairs have first aid stations if you feel faint or cannot keep fluids down; tell them you take Ozempic or another GLP-1. Afterward, simple, bland foods are usually easiest. Our guide on what to eat after your Ozempic injection has ideas.

Enjoy the rest of the fair

The fair is more than food. Exhibits, livestock shows, music, and people-watching are all part of it. Many people on these medications find they enjoy the day more when it is not built entirely around eating. Our guide on getting the most out of your GLP-1 treatment covers the everyday habits that matter more than any single day out.

The short version

Eat a proper breakfast, pick two or three must-have fair foods, share them, and space them out. Look for grilled and protein options. Do rides before eating and skip the most intense spinners if you are prone to nausea. Carry water, use shade, and watch for dehydration. Time your injection away from fair day and hold any dose increase. Use first aid if you need it.
