Wedding Guest on Ozempic: Ceremony, Cocktail Hour and the Open Bar

Being a wedding guest sounds easy until you look at the schedule. You travel, sometimes a long way. You get dressed up and wait for a ceremony that starts late. Cocktail hour brings passed appetizers and drinks on an empty stomach. Dinner is served well into the evening, the open bar runs for hours, and the cake comes out near midnight.

On Ozempic or another GLP-1, most of what goes wrong at weddings comes down to timing: long gaps without food, then a lot of rich food and alcohol all at once, late at night. A little planning fixes most of it.

Time your injection around the wedding

Side effects tend to be strongest in the first few days after a dose. The prescribing information for Wegovy, which contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic, notes that maximum concentration is reached one to three days after a dose. That matches what many people report: the roughest stretch is the few days after the injection rather than injection day itself.

Work backwards from the wedding date. If the wedding is on a Saturday, injecting on Wednesday or Thursday puts it right in that window. Injecting earlier in the week, or the weekend before, is usually better. Ask your provider before shifting your usual day.

Do not step up your dose in the weeks before. Ask your provider to hold any increase until after the wedding. Our guide on dose escalation covers how the steps usually work, and a family wedding is a perfectly good reason to wait.

If you are just starting Ozempic, the first weeks tend to bring the strongest side effects. Our guide on the Ozempic starting dose covers what to expect.

Before the ceremony

Eat a real meal a few hours before you leave, with protein. Getting ready often takes hours, and it is easy to arrive at the venue having eaten nothing since breakfast.

Bring a small snack in your bag or pocket, such as a protein bar or a handful of nuts. Ceremonies start late, photos run long, and dinner may be hours away.

Drink water while you get ready.

Cocktail hour

Cocktail hour is often the riskiest part of the day: drinks on an empty stomach, standing in the sun or heat, and rich passed appetizers.

Take a few appetizers with protein when they come round, such as skewers, shrimp, or cheese.

Start with water or a soft drink, then have your first alcoholic drink once you have eaten something.

Find shade if the cocktail hour is outdoors.

Dinner

Wedding dinners are often served late and in several courses.

Eat slowly and take what you want from each course. Nobody at a wedding is watching your plate.

Start with protein if you can only manage part of the meal.

Leave room or leave it. If you are full before the main course arrives, that is fine. If the cake arrives at 11 p.m., a bite or two is plenty.

The open bar

An open bar is designed to keep drinks flowing for hours. Your old tolerance is not a reliable guide on these medications. People on them are often eating less, drinking less water, and may weigh noticeably less than at the last wedding they attended.

Set a number before you arrive, and tell your partner or a friend.

Alternate every drink with water. Order them together at the bar.

Choose simpler drinks. Sweet cocktails and shots go down quickly and are hard to pace.

Plan your ride home before the reception starts, and never drive after drinking.

Clothes and comfort

Formal clothes are often tight around the waist. Shapewear, a fitted dress, or a snug waistband after a large meal on a slow stomach can be very uncomfortable, and pressure on a full stomach can make reflux worse. Many people on these medications find a slightly looser fit makes for a much better evening. If your clothes no longer fit because you have lost weight, getting something altered or choosing something new may be worth it.

Dancing

Dancing for hours after drinking, in a warm room, is dehydrating. Keep a glass of water on your table and drink between songs. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, sit down, drink some water, and eat something.

Destination weddings

If the wedding is abroad or in another state, think about your medication. Keep it in your hand luggage, check how you will store it at your destination, and ask your pharmacy how long your product can be out of the fridge. For a short trip, injecting before you leave can mean carrying nothing. Our guide on storing compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide at home covers the requirements.

Consider this scenario: a guest on Ozempic injects on the Thursday before a Saturday wedding and steps up their dose the same week. They skip lunch while getting ready, drink two glasses of champagne at cocktail hour on an empty stomach, eat a heavy steak dinner at 9 p.m., and keep drinking at the open bar. By midnight they are nauseated and leave early. Injecting earlier in the week, holding the dose increase, eating lunch, and alternating drinks with water would very likely have given them the whole night.

The morning after

If you feel queasy the next morning, simple, bland foods are usually easiest. Our guide on what to eat after your Ozempic injection has ideas that also work after a long night. Drink water steadily, and if you are vomiting repeatedly and cannot keep fluids down, contact your provider or seek medical help.

The short version

Time your injection so the wedding is not in the one to three days after it, and hold any dose increase. Eat a real meal before you leave and carry a snack. At cocktail hour, eat before you drink. Take what you want at dinner and leave the rest. At the open bar, set a number, alternate with water, and plan your ride home. Choose comfortable clothes, drink water while dancing, and plan medication storage for destination weddings.
